Financials rose 1.4 percent on the back of Berkshire Hathaway's massive stock buyback, which sent Berkshire shares up more than 4 percent and lifted the Dow and S&P 500.
The Nasdaq Composite bucked the positive trend, however, pressured by declines in Apple and Amazon.
